I am a multidisciplinary artist exploring connection and resonance between different beings. My practice begins with questions around loneliness, the longing to be connected, the desire to share sensation with others in order to survive, and the unbearable rigidity of fixed ideas. Why is art so often understood primarily through the language of sight? Why are the stories of women and minorities repeatedly distorted or pushed to the margins within myth, history, and institutional systems? Why must art alter its direction in order to belong within existing structures?

These questions naturally lead my gaze toward systems of authority and power, and toward those who exist outside of them.
Using materials such as putty, acrylic, salt, and paraffin, I layer and build physical substances, leaving traces of cracks, flow, and pressure across surfaces and spaces. For me, material is not merely a visual element, but a language sensed through the body.

My recent work has expanded from painting into installation and participatory forms, experimenting with experiences that move beyond looking: touching, detaching, holding, and being held. Through these works, I seek to create moments in which fixed boundaries briefly loosen, beings become perceptible to one another again, and invisible connections begin to flow once more through the body.

Hanok Kim, Wish Cake, 2026
Mixed media, participatory workshop object

Wish Cake is a participatory work developed for Story Workshop, a self-recovery project mediated through art. Participants create cakes that cannot be eaten, but can be kept for a long time, shaping their own wishes, comfort, and tenderness into physical form.

This work is less about making something perfectly than about placing one’s heart into a form. In a strange classroom where mistakes are allowed and failure is welcome, participants return, even briefly, to the mind of a child and sincerely wish for one another’s hopes to come true. Wish Cake is a gift offered to the small child who still lives within us, and a moment of touching life again with tenderness.

Where life has scratched through, a fracture remains. Yet the fracture is not merely a trace of damage; it is also a place where light enters and begins to bloom again. *Light from the Scratched Place* explores a surface where wound and recovery, rupture and becoming, occur at the same time. The black marks burst and spread, yet the gold and flesh-toned ground beneath them continues to glow. This work does not suggest that wounds are beautiful in themselves, but records the possibility that light can still grow after them.

A moment I try to hold onto—
but it slips away all the same.
I cannot control it. I choose not to.
Past, present, and future meet at a single point, intersect,
and then each carves its own path again.
—Working with the temporality of salt

This work is not fixed.
It continues to change with time and environment.
I do not try to stop it.

〈Ecdysis: Silver Test — Future Skin〉

〈Ecdysis: Silver Test〉 is a work that asks how human and nonhuman beings might come to understand one another’s senses and coexist in a future that extends into outer space.

In this work, silver is not treated simply as a color, but as a sensory organ that detects the toxicity and danger of the world — a kind of future skin. Silver has long been regarded as a metal capable of detecting poison. Drawing on this association, I interpret the silver surface as a new sensory device situated between human skin and robotic sensors.

In the future, humans and robots will perceive the world in different ways. Humans pass through danger through wounds, emotions, memories, and bodily reactions, while robots read the world through sensors, data, signals, and algorithms. 〈Ecdysis: Silver Test〉 explores the possibility that these different modes of perception do not have to collide, but can instead translate and resonate with one another.

The surface of the work is built through layers of putty, acrylic, salt, and metallic silver pigment. Putty hardens like an artificial skin. Salt draws in traces of time and corrosion. The silver pigment glimmers through the cracks like a sensing device. The lines stretching across the surface branch out like blood vessels and neural networks, tree roots and circuits, the grain of waves and cosmic terrain.

Here, ecdysis is not an act of abandoning an old body, but a process of renewing one’s senses in order to live alongside other beings. The boundaries between human and robot, organism and machine, nature and technology are not fixed. They continue to split, connect, and flow again.

〈Ecdysis: Silver Test〉 suggests that peace in the future will not come from becoming the same, but from beings with different senses learning to detect and respect one another’s vulnerability. This work records the moment when a body, having come into contact with the world, reacts, splits open, survives, and is reborn through a new posthuman sense.

You were my twenties,
And now, we are thirty in a world without each other.
Moments without you pile upon the countless hours we shared.

To be honest,
I’m doing just fine without you.
But,
It’s a bit less fun.

Why aren’t you here?

Life runs ceaselessly toward the moment of full bloom.
Yet full bloom foretells its inevitable withering.
Because eternity does not exist,
because something is born from nothingness,
everything that blossoms shines like a fleeting flame.
This work records the peak and demise of life,
and the unease that flows between them.

"It is because eternity does not exist
that we dream of it.
From nothingness, something is born.
One who has pondered death deeply
comes to love life;
and in loving life,
one returns again to the thought of death."

At the command of Aphrodite,
god of love and desire,
the sculptor Pygmalion began his work—
a creation born of love.

At first, she saw the faces of past lovers.
Then came dreams that never came true.
And at last, the traces of parting.

Sweat mixed with tears as she carved.

And when the long hours of labor ended,
the figure that emerged—
was none other than herself.

She named the figure Galatea.

This painting was inspired by the mega crew mission video Dream Realm - On the borders of the dream realm (directed by Honey J) of Team Korea “Bumsup” from World of Street Woman Fighter.
It celebrates those who bloom with their own unique flowers while wandering between the boundaries of life and death, dream and reality, familiar chaos and the unfamiliar unknown.

Though I may not be able to convey it to them directly,
this work is filled with love and support,
dedicated to the dancers of SWF and Team Korea “Bumsup.”

Shinmyeong)

This piece was born from the question: Is the concept of "visual art" inherently designed for the non-disabled, excluding those who face challenges in visual accessibility?

With this in mind, I created a work that can be appreciated not only through sight but also touch.

This piece is Award-Winning Work: Special Selection in the 38th Korea Painting Competition (Western Painting Division)

This piece portrays Hera, one of the twelve Olympian gods, as the protector of the home and a god of prophecy. The painting captures the symbolism of Hera’s sacred peacock, its wings adorned with all-seeing eyes that observe and safeguard the world.

Unaffected by the sound of Hermes’ flute, Hera’s eyes are embedded in all things, watching over and nurturing life. Hera is created on a wooden board using gold powder, paper, modeling paste, acrylic paint, and mother-of-pearl. The interplay of light continuously alters its appearance, as if embodying Hera’s ever-watchful presence, guarding all that is precious.

Hera has often been depicted as a jealous figure in mythology, reduced to a flat stereotype. This piece reinterprets her story, challenging the classical narrative to reveal her as an all-seeing, all-hearing, protective, and prophetic god. The artwork is designed with a rich texture that gives it a three-dimensional effect, allowing viewers to engage not only visually but also through touch.

'A work depicting Hera, one of the 12 Olympian gods, who protects families and foretells the future.
It features the wings of the peacock, a symbol of Hera, and the eyes that watch over all things.
Her gaze is unaffected by the sound of Hermes’ flute. Hera’s eyes dwell in all things, observing and nurturing life.

Not a mere incarnation of jealousy,
but a God who listens, sees, protects, and foretells.'

This work is inspired by the story of Ariadne in Greek and Roman mythology.

“An ode and encouragement to those who carve their own destiny. A guiding thread that keeps one from losing their way in the labyrinth, a gift of light that shines brighter the darker it gets.”

The piece symbolizes hope and guidance, helping us navigate the intricate labyrinth of life. The phrase “a thread that shines brighter in the darkness” conveys the courage and hope that emerge most vividly in times of hardship.

It offers comfort and inspiration to those who continue to shape their own destiny amid trials, carrying the message that no matter how overwhelming the struggle, one must never give up on moving forward.

If it hadn’t been for Ariadne,
If it hadn’t been for the thread she gave,
Theseus might not have found his way out of the labyrinth,
Nor defeated the Minotaur.
The true hero is not Theseus but Ariadne.

Wishing for you to take the thread
that determines your own fate directly into your hands.

Chapter 1: In the world of the gods, there was a paradise full of trees bearing the fruit of enlightenment, the ‘Golden Apples’, which revealed the essence of the world. The god who tended to this paradise was named ‘Idun’.

Prometheus, as punishment for stealing Idun’s Golden Apples and giving them to mortal women, faced the wrath of Zeus.

Zeus feared and envied the expansion of knowledge among mortal women.

Chapter 2: Is the hidden truth a paradise? To Eve, who is confused, Medusa offers the Golden Apple.

Eve eagerly bites into the fruit.

Even if driven out of the false paradise, to behold clear truth.

Chapter 3: I offer you the same fruit.

이둔의 황금사과 ( The fruit of Veritas )

Medusa, in the form of a serpent, approaches Eve and whispers the truth.

Context)

Spreading Tenderness embodies the belief that kindness and warmth spread instantly, soothing hearts and giving people the strength to carry on. This piece was inspired by a serendipitous reunion with kind and gentle friends at my longtime friend's wedding—friends who have remained steadfast, offering unwavering warmth and support.

In tribute to them, the artwork carries another title, named after these cherished friends.

(Spreading Tenderness)

I think of the courageous people who chose to be kind in a world filled with cynicism and selfishness. How strong it is to be good! Today, as I reminisce about those small yet significant acts of kindness that nurture the heart, I endure another weary day.

Admiring Tenderness

Unfolding the neatly folded blanket,
I lie still upon it.

Regrets and thoughts tangle in my mind,
A sharp sting pierces my chest.

Why does it hurt here when my heart aches?

Ah, my heart must be somewhere around here.

Tears scattered upon the pillow are no illusion.

I’ve been suffering reality as if it were a dream.

(Embroidered Tears on the Pillowcase)

(Soliloquy)

Rooted prejudices begin with the oldest stories.
In the painting The Last Supper, why is Mary Magdalene, Jesus’ female disciple, absent?
And who prepared the meal they are eating?
From the realm of the unseen,
women step into the frame of the visible.
And that very painting is considered sacrilegious and burned.
It creates a record that cannot be erased, even by burning or wiping away.

(Who prepared the last meal?)

God came out into the streets, knelt down, and confessed.

“I am not different from you.”

The women in the street asked,

“You are noble and exalted, seated on high. You are not like us, the lowly ones. How can you say we are the same?”

Then God confessed,

“It is said that those who come from the darkest and lowest places will become the light of this world.

You and I do not have different faces.”

(The confession of God)

Bees perceive what human beings can't see.
Are we perceiving the essence of objects?

(How Bees Perceive The World)

This piece was inspired by sea glass found in the ocean and waves. Sea glass is a jewel formed when glass bottles thrown into the sea are worn down by the passing waves.Like sparkling sea glass, I send unwavering love and support to shining women. We are loosely yet tightly connected, shining together.

(The Daughters of Sea)

”Then, we shall gladly
open this box together,
to become a terrifying calamity
that will overturn the world,
etched into everyone’s memory.

So, let us live together
in this broken world.”

(Pandora's Box)

'The world so easily diminishes
our bond, our feelings for one another.

Yet, I look at you, listen to you,
and as you see me clearly and embrace me,
who dares to infringe upon
our steadfast sisterhood, love, and friendship?
Those outside are simply consumed by jealousy and slander.

They say certain moments are eternal,
and the moments I’ve shared with you,
each and every one of them,
are eternity to me.'

🦋 Exhibition Announcement:

I will be participating in the group exhibition "<애열>" at Project Space Q located in Seoul. '애열(Bittersweet)' carries two meanings:
1.Feeling love and happiness
2.Feeling sad to the point of choking or wheezing.

I interpret these meanings as not mutually exclusive but rather complementary. My artworks express the idea of loving life and experiencing pain because of that love. Even in pain, I continue to live and tell stories of love through my art, believing that these stories are completed by the viewers who appreciate my work.I sincerely welcome everyone to visit the exhibition. During the exhibition period, I will upload my presence schedule in advance. Thank you. Hanok Kim

🦋 Hello, It's Ha Nok Kim. I would like to inform that I will participate in the exhibition promoted by the ArteMida Experience organization of Sista Massimiliano, which will be held from 25/06/2024 to 06/07/2024, at the prestigious MA-EC Gallery, within the walls of Palazzo Durini (750 meters from the Duomo of Milan), in via Santa Maria Valle 2, Milan.

The exhibition "Visioni Oniriche" is conceived as an exploration of each artist's dreams, aspirations and visions of the future through contemporary expression. Participating artists are invited to interpret and translate the multiple dimensions of the dream world into works of art, offering the public a unique emotional and conceptual experience. The exhibition aims to stimulate reflection on the power of dreams in shaping our perceptions, our choices and our destiny. In an ever-changing world, dream visions can serve as a source of inspiration, hope, and transformation. Through a wide range of artistic mediums and creative approaches, we aim to explore the multiple perspectives on dream visions, encouraging deep reflection on the meaning and importance of these experiences in contemporary art.

Hello, this is Ha Nok Kim.

I’m excited to share some great news—my first award of 2025 and an upcoming group exhibition!

At the 46th Korea Calligraphy Association's Korea Creative Art Grand Prize Exhibition, both of my submitted works in the Western Painting category have passed the first round and received preliminary awards. They are now headed to the final round of judging. I’ll share the final results as soon as they are announced.

With that, I’ll wrap up this message.

<일정 및 위치>

🌹 August Exhibition Announcement

Hello, this is Ha Nok Kim.

I am grateful and excited to share that I will be participating in the Illustration Answer M&M exhibition at BINCAN, under the “Maximum” category.

For this exhibition, I have created a piece that captures the moment when emotions are heightened through color. In line with the exhibition’s theme—“Every illustration is an answer”—I wanted to convey a message that questions the boundary between digital illustration and painting, something I have long been exploring.

I look forward to sharing conversations and experiences with visitors through my work. If you plan to visit, please feel free to DM or leave a comment. I would love to send you a custom mobile invitation I’ve designed and arrange a time to greet you in person!

Thank you, as always, for your support.
Warm regards,
